St Brendan’s College Celebrates Historic Sporting Milestone: Harry Grant Named Captain of the Australian Kangaroos

Sport Monday, 03 Nov 2025

St Brendan’s College proudly celebrates a historic moment as 2015 graduate Harry Grant is appointed captain of the Australian Kangaroos for the second test of the 2026 Ashes Series. The match will be held at Hill Dickenson Stadium in Liverpool, home of English Premier League team Everton, marking the first time a St Brendan’s old boy has led a national side of such prominence.

Harry Grant’s journey from the fields of Yeppoon to the international stage comes as no surprise to those who witnessed his early years at St Brendan’s College. His sporting talent was evident from the moment he arrived in Year 8, where he was named Athletics Age Champion. That same competitive spirit and commitment to excellence continued throughout his time at the College, culminating in his recognition as Senior Sportsperson of the Year in 2015. A reflection of his all-round dedication and leadership across multiple disciplines.

Beyond Rugby League, Harry was actively involved across many aspects of College life. He represented St Brendan’s in Cross Country, Athletics, Swimming, Touch Football, Rugby Union, Rodeo Club, Aboriginal Dancing, also volunteered his time for Eddie’s Van and was a proud member of the 2015 Student Leadership Team.

Glen Minto, Harry’s former assistant coach and current St Brendan’s College teacher and 1st XIII Assistant Coach, reflected on his character and journey. “He was such a tenacious competitor and proud SBC lad. Still is to this day.”

This proud moment is not only shared by the College, but also by the Grant family, long-standing and deeply respected members of the Yeppoon community. Mr and Mrs Grant have consistently given back to the region, positively impacting the lives of many young people through their generosity and mentorship. Harry's rise to such heights reflects the values instilled in him by his family and the community that surrounds them.

The year 2025 also marked a major milestone for St Brendan’s College, as we became the leading producer of Queensland State of Origin players. With Kurt Mann (Senior 2010) joining Harry Grant in the Maroons squad, the College now proudly claims more Origin representatives than any other school in the state with 9 old boys having worn the jersey for QLD. What unites these men, beyond their elite talent, is the shared culture of humility, brotherhood, and resilience that defines the Brendan’s spirit.

Adding to the celebration, St Brendan’s College proudly reflects on the powerful legacy of our Old Boys, highlighted in the 2025 NRL Grand Final where Harry Grant (Senior 2015) and Ben Hunt (Senior 2007) stood on opposite sides of the field, both legacy of our College’s enduring culture of excellence, humility, and brotherhood.
