The St Brendan’s Cattle Team is off to a flying start to the Central Queensland show season. To date, in the first five weeks of this term, we have successfully attended six local shows — The Caves, Monto, Marlborough, Baralaba, Theodore, and, last weekend, the Callide Valley Show at Biloela.
Students and cattle have been performing exceptionally well, with the Cambil Brahman section of our team made up of two grey Brahman bulls and a grey Brahman heifer. This trio has been generously provided by 1990 Old Boy Lawson Camm from Cambil Stud at Proserpine. The team has done a fantastic job breaking in and preparing these stud cattle alongside the rest of the team. In return for showing them, St Brendan’s Brahman Stud will retain ownership of the heifer for our own program, while the two bulls will return to Cambil at the end of the season. This trio is particularly special, as they are embryo calves from the same sire and dam, making them genetically full siblings.
We are also showing our Bulla Brangus cow, who has now calved and has a beautiful heifer calf at foot. Our Cambil heifer from last year, Miss Jewel, is also part of the team and is about three months in calf, so we are hopeful she will have a strong calf beside her at Beef 2027 next year.
The led steers are also performing well, with both SBC Richie Rich and SBC Gyranda placing highly in the local Feedpro School Steer Competition. SBC Richie Rich is currently leading, with four of the eight eligible shows still to come. Fingers crossed, with $1,200 worth of grain from Feedpro up for grabs.
All of our cattle have broken in well, and the students should be commended for the effort they’ve put into preparing and presenting them. Particular mention goes to Josh Williams and Beau Upton, who are doing an outstanding job handling the bulls.
Our students are also excelling in junior parading, stud and prime judging. Ty Gretton has progressed through to the Sub-Chamber finals at Mt Larcom for junior parading. Josh Williams will compete in both prime and stud judging at the Sub-Chamber finals at Ridgelands Show, alongside Angus Crawford and Digby Sauer, who will contest the stud judging.
Baralaba Show-May 9 2026 -1st Josh Williams, 2nd Angus Crawford, 3rd Amelia Lawrence STU, 4th Digby Sauer, 5th Matt Travers
The way our students have conducted themselves throughout the season has been outstanding. It was especially pleasing to see the boys proudly wearing purple “Not Now, Not Ever” shirts last Friday at Biloela in support of the College’s Walk Against Domestic Violence.
SBC Cattle Club boys are renowned for lending a hand wherever they go. Here they are doing their part, at the Callide Valley Show.
A sincere thank you to the staff who make it possible to attend these shows. Miss Mel, Miss Emma and Miss Kim have all generously given their time to attend shows and drive buses, and our greatest addition this year has been the support of Mr Hayden Schurmann, who joined us at the Callide Valley Show.
