Riley Taking Pathway to Engineering

Riley Taking Pathway to Engineering

Riley, from Morven, a small town 50 minutes from Charleville with a population of about 250, is a Senior at St Brendan’s College.  Riley’s family have acreage where they run cattle, sheep, and goats as well as Gidgee campgrounds.  When Riley is home he helps with stock work, cooking and campground maintenance.  His mum also runs an online business - Gidgee-Smith Bags, which produces PVC work and gear bags as well as custom plasma cut ornaments and gifts.

Riley has been at St Brendan’s since 2017 entering the College as a Year 7 boarding student. His older brother Reegan, also boarded at St Brendan’s, graduating in 2016.

‘At first it was a bit daunting being away from home as a 12-year-old but hanging out with friends from all over Australia and making mates for life has been a huge benefit.’

Riley has done well academically and enjoys maths and engineering with the hope of living locally and going to university to become a mechanical engineer.  To help Riley take steps towards his engineering goal, he is currently completing a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, which is one of the many pathways the College offers through it’s VET Program.

‘Living at the College has become a second home; I think living in boarding has helped me improve my grades because all the boys work together to get their schoolwork done.’

Currently, our boarding enrolments are more than 250.  Our community consists of students from all over Australia including the Northern Territory, Torres Strait and New South Wales.  Western Students have access to a bus that runs out to Roma at the beginning and end of each term.  Our Principal, Mr Rob Corboy and new Assistant Principal Residential, Mr James Couper are heading out to Cunnamulla, Quilpie and Charleville in the next few days and would love to meet up with parents, old boys and prospective families.
