Teaching & Learning

Effective teaching and learning are at the core of a great education and are dependant upon recognising different learning needs. St Brendan's College tailors the curriculum to cater for individual students who learn in different ways and at different rates. Our system of journey groups provides the assistance to develop or extend basic skills and is fundamental to that principle. We work with the notion that students need multiple pathways to grow and develop.

The curriculum in Years 8 to 10 is organised in Trimesters. The Trimester approach de-clutters the curriculum content, allows for richer learning experiences, and reduces the assessment load on students in Years 8 to 10. Students are also supported by "Learning to Learn" classes in Years 8, 9 and 10. These classes provide support to develop refined learning skills across the curriculum. In addition, students receive support in the development of core literacies through a Structured Reading Program. Students also have the opportunity of joining the instrumental band program which is a timetabled part of the curriculum.

Students in Years 11 and 12 have an extensive variety of subjects from which to choose. Studies undertaken at this level begin preparation for post-school options. A strong and supportive Careers Education Program assists students to make informed decisions about their course of study and their post-school options.

The curriculum offers students the opportunity to study both academic subjects as well as Vocational Education Units. The Vocational courses of study provide students with entry level training qualifications which are industry endorsed.

All modules are Nationally Accredited and are recognised under the National Training Framework. Students can articulate results to TAFE, Apprenticeships and Traineeships. These subjects provide a robust head start to a trade-based future.
